Shallow well pump service covers jet pumps drawing from wells under about 25 feet. We see more of them here than a contractor an hour west would, because our water sits high enough to reach. Repair or replacement runs $600 to $1,400 installed, well under the $1,500 to $2,500 a submersible costs. Fayetteville Well Pump Repair covers all of it, with the full range on our cost page.
A jet pump lifts water by suction, and suction has a hard ceiling. Air pressure will not push water up more than about 25 feet, no matter how big the motor is. That one fact decides which pump your well can use. It is why shallow well pumps are common in Fayetteville and rare in the Piedmont.
Coastal Plain sand holds the water table high enough for a surface pump to reach on most lots in this county. If the water level on your quote is wrong, everything after it is wrong too, which is why we measure before quoting and why a dry tap gets diagnosed differently on a jet system.
What is actually wrong
Single-pipe shallow jet, under 25 ft
One suction line into your well, with the pump sitting in a crawlspace or well house. This is the simplest system on the market and the cheapest for us to service, because everything that can fail is at arm's reach. We can usually have one apart and diagnosed inside an hour.
Convertible jet, 25 to 90 ft
Two pipes and an ejector down the well. It reaches depth a single-pipe unit cannot while keeping your motor above ground where we can get at it. We find these on older Cumberland County properties where the well predates submersibles being standard.
Loss of prime
A jet pump that loses prime pulls air and stops delivering water. It is usually a failed foot valve, a cracked suction line or a check valve that no longer seals. Priming it without finding the leak means doing it again next week. So we pressure-test the suction side instead of just refilling it.
When a jet pump is the wrong answer
If your water level has dropped past the suction ceiling, no repair to the jet pump holds through a dry August. That means converting to a submersible at $1,500 to $2,500. We tell you that before you pay for a rebuild we know will fail.
How we work it out
-
Measure the water level
We establish whether your well is still inside jet pump range before anything else gets discussed, because everything after this depends on that number.
-
Pressure and vacuum test the suction side
We find the leak that is costing you prime. A 5-minute vacuum hold test tells us whether your line is sound.
-
Inspect the foot valve and check valve
We pull and inspect the foot valve and the check valve. These two parts are behind most prime loss on Coastal Plain installs, because sand wears valve seats far faster than clean rock-well water does.
-
Repair or convert, with numbers on paper
We quote jet repair at $600 to $1,400. If converting is the honest answer, we give you that price too, and you choose with both figures in front of you.
Equipment, standards and what they change for you
Why 25 feet is a hard limit
A jet pump lowers the pressure above the water and lets air pressure push it up. At sea level that gives about 34 feet in theory. Friction and pump efficiency cut the real figure to roughly 25. A bigger motor does not change physics, which is why anyone selling you more horsepower to fix a depth problem is selling you the wrong thing.
What we fit on a jet system
We use Sta-Rite and Goulds shallow and convertible jets, Flint & Walling on replacement work, and Square D pressure switches. We fit Simmons brass foot valves rather than plastic, because sand scores the seat and the seat is what fails on a well here.
The permit line, and where it does not apply
Converting your jet system to a submersible on an existing well needs no permit. Drilling a new well does. The Cumberland County Department of Public Health charges $320, and the well has to sit the required distance from your septic drainfield. If a quote for pump work carries a permit fee, you are being charged for work that is not happening.
Grouting is the defect you cannot see
15A NCAC 02C requires the space around your casing grouted to full depth. Partial grout lets surface water run down the outside of the casing into your water. That is the defect behind most positive coliform results after heavy rain. On an older well it is worth reading the well record before assuming a water problem needs treatment.
Numbers worth knowing
| Shallow jet suction ceiling | about 25 ft |
|---|---|
| Convertible jet working range | 25 to 90 ft |
| Theoretical lift at sea level | 34 ft before friction losses |
| Cut-in / cut-out | 30/50 or 40/60 psi |
| Tank pre-charge | 2 psi below cut-in |
| Most common failure part | foot valve, accelerated by suspended sand |
Well pump work in Fayetteville runs $150 to $3,500 for most homes. What decides the number is whether the fault sits outside the well or in it, and how deep the pump hangs.
| What the job is | Typical range | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| External component: pressure switch, control box, wiring, primingThe pump itself is fine. Cheapest outcome and the most common one. | $150 – $500 | installed |
| Pressure tank replacementTank, tank tee, gauge, switch and fittings, sized on drawdown. A waterlogged tank is what makes a pump short-cycle. | $1,000 – $2,300 | installed |
| Shallow well or jet pump, to about 25 ftCommon on Coastal Plain sand wells, where the water table sits high enough that a jet pump still works. | $600 – $1,400 | installed |
| Deep submersible pump, well 100 to 200 ftTypical Fayetteville well depth. Price covers pulling the old pump, drop pipe and wire. | $1,500 – $2,500 | installed |
| Deep submersible pump, well 300 to 400 ft or higher horsepowerDepth drives horsepower and hoist labor together. Every extra 100 ft adds roughly $500 to $1,000 in pipe, wire and time. | $2,800 – $5,500 | installed |
| Full system replacement: pump, tank, wiringWorth doing together when the pump is original and the tank is the same age. | $3,500 – $6,000 | installed |

Sand is the thing that kills foot valves here. It is also the thing that keeps the water table shallow enough to run a jet pump at all.Fayetteville Well Pump Repair
Who we work for
- Well and Pump Service for Farms Stock water, wash-down, irrigation and a farmhouse on one well. Sized on sustained draw, not acreage.
- Well Service for Mobile Home Parks Shared supply with tenants attached. Past 15 connections it stops being a private well at all.
- Well Service for Churches and Camps Idle most of the week, then a full building. The hardest duty cycle in private water supply.

Questions we get asked
How much does shallow well pump repair cost?
Shallow well and jet pump repair or replacement runs $600 to $1,400 installed in the Fayetteville area. Smaller faults such as a pressure switch or foot valve fall in the $150 to $500 range.
How deep can a shallow well pump pull water?
About 25 feet. A jet pump works by suction and atmospheric pressure sets a hard ceiling near 34 feet before friction losses, so adding horsepower does not extend the reach. Past that depth the system needs a convertible jet or a submersible.
Why does my jet pump keep losing prime?
Almost always a leak on the suction side: a failed foot valve, a cracked suction line, or a check valve that no longer seats. Suspended sand in Coastal Plain wells wears valve seats faster than in rock wells, which is why foot valves are the usual culprit here.
Are shallow well pumps common in Fayetteville?
More common than in the Piedmont. Fayetteville sits on Coastal Plain sand aquifer where the water table is high enough for surface-mounted jet pumps to work, while fractured-rock wells west of here generally need a submersible.
Who services shallow well pumps near me in Fayetteville?
Fayetteville Well Pump Repair services shallow and jet pumps across Fayetteville and Cumberland County. On-site estimates are free and itemized in writing before work starts.
If your jet pump is losing prime, call and we pressure-test the suction side; the leak is there. If the water table has moved, no repair holds and we quote a conversion instead. Either way you get the number on paper first. Full ranges are on the cost page, and the rest of what we handle is on the services page.
